Dover AFB, Delaware Question?
I’m a 22 year old Female who just graduated USAF Basic Training on June 12th. I’m in tech school right now and I leave to go to my permanent duty station (dover De) in a couple of weeks. I am in my 4 day time period where I can change bases with someone in my same job. I have the choice of switching to go to Las Vegas (Nellis AFB) and looking into both. I don’t gamble, so I’m thinking Vegas might be a little boring to me being that its all desert, but I also don’t know a lot about Delaware either. If you’ve been to either or both for that matter, pleaseeeee give me some helpful tips, even if you think its useless! Thanks in Advance!
Vegas isnt bad but you are in the middle of the desert and unless you like the outdoors alot you will have a ways to drive to have fun outside of the casinos. I’ve only been to vegas on vacation once and it was fun but don’t think I could live there everyday.
Now Dover AFB was my second base and my first as a married man. We loved it and miss it each day. There’s tax-free shopping, cheap cost of living, low real estate taxes and no heavy traffic, rush hour lasts about 10 minutes. During the summer you can party it up at Dewey beach which is only 30 minutes away from Dover or you can make the drive to Ocean City MD which is about an hour away, The base services also has day trips to New York which are pretty cool as you don’t have to drive and worry about parking. You are also very close to Philly, Baltimore and DC so you can make day trips out to those cities furthest drive will be 1.5 to 2 hours.
If you are into NASCAR there are the two races that triples the population of Dover, its like Mardi Gras twice a year. The nightlife is not bad either, I’m sure its not like vegas but it is still fun.
Winters are very mild once in a while you’ll get snow which will melt by noon. Dover has alot of nice neighborhoods and areas to live, very few bad places though there are some. If I were you I would stick with Dover. Plus Dover falls under AMC, one of if not the best commands to be enlisted in.
